A wonderful custom version of the Kühnl & Hoyer Bart van Lier model, handcrafted in Markt Erlbach, Germany. K&H has long been one of my favorite modern makers because of the incredible attention to detail throughout their instruments. From the quality of the materials and precision of the assembly to the ergonomics, finish work, and exceptionally smooth slide action, everything feels thoughtfully executed. This particular example features a matte lacquer finish and Bart van Lier’s distinctive balancing system, resulting in an instrument that feels remarkably comfortable and natural in the hands.
The sound is everything you would hope for from a great European jazz trombone: focused, colorful, and projecting, with enough depth and warmth to avoid the thin or brittle character that some smaller bore instruments can develop.
